Geotechnical Engineering

HDL has traditionally thought “outside the box” in solving problems and has successfully used multiple techniques to solve geotechnical challenges throughout Alaska.  We are well-versed in using computer modeling to assist in developing design recommendations.  We use finite element programs including Temp/W, Sigma/W, and Seep/W to conduct thermal, settlement/displacement, and seepage analyses.  These programs can be combined to evaluate the nature of settlements caused by thermal degradation.  We also use the limit equilibrium Slope/W program to evaluate slope stability in both static and seismic conditions. We have pioneered the use of dynamic compaction in Alaska and the use of large-diameter helical piers in frozen soils for wind turbine foundations.  Additionally, we routinely develop design solutions with the understanding of future climate changes and how these changes may impact the design life of structures.  Some of this experience includes deep large diameter helical pier pile foundations for wind turbines in warm permafrost, thermal modeling of embankments over warm, ice-rich permafrost, dynamic compaction of loose soils for critical facilities such as power plants, and rock and soil anchors for wind turbines and communication towers.
